To figure out how to make a user's experience of a better, a UX designer will have to:
Research: Find out from old,new and prospective users, of a product(say a website) how easy and satisfying their experience was. What improvements do they look forward and so on.This is termed User Research.

Create User Persona: Think of a user persona as fictional users of your products, imagine their various needs, behaviours, expectations etc. This will help think diversely of ways to improve your product to easily satisfy all the various users there may be.
Create Wireframes and Prototypes: wireframe is a step by step plan of what a product should look like, work like and the need it is meant to solve, while I like to think of prototype as sample product for trail/ testing, getting feedbacks/reviews and improved before launching out to the general public.
Testing: when a designer had creates a prototype of a product, actually users try it out to ensure that it is working as intended, corrections and improvements are made and the they testing continues until the wireframe in replicated in the product design. The continuous process of improving, correcting and testing is termed iteration.
Testing is the final job of a ux designer before the UI designer step in.
